老年人体育群众体育的一个方面，它的任务是发动、组织老年人参加适当的体育活动，增进健康，延缓衰老，防治老年性疾病。几千年来，人类在防老抗病方面积累了丰富的经验，经验证明，运动是一种很好的方法。《庄子·刻意》中有这样一段话：导引之土"吹呴呼吸，吐故纳新，熊经鸟伸，为寿而已矣。"到了东汉末年，名医华佗更明确主张:"熊经鸱顾,引挽腰体,动诸关节,以求难老。"他用自己编的"五禽戏"坚持锻炼身体，"年且百岁，而有壮容"。近年来，世界上有些国家，由于科学技术发达，自动化程度提高，营养条件改善，人们体力劳动减少，患心血管病、 糖尿病、 肥胖症等病的人越来越多。美国、日本、英国、德意志联邦共和国、瑞典等国一些热心的人士,建立了老年人体育组织,开展老年人体育活动。象日本就有"海龟老壮年长跑协会"、"一生健康马拉松协会"等组织，每年都要举行一些大型的老年人体育活动。1975年在加拿大的多伦多市还举行了第 1届世界老年运动员田径运动会，同时成立了"世界老年运动员协会"，确定每两年举行一次运动会。第2届和第3届运动会于1977年、1979年分别在瑞典、德意志联邦共和国举行。1981年在新西兰举行的第 4届运动会，有来自44个国家和地区的 2500名老运动员参加比赛。 世界上还有"国际老年人长跑协会"等组织，举行过国际老年人长跑比赛。为交流老年人体育情况，1979年 2月，中国接待了日本"海龟"协会友好访华团。该团18名成员先后访问了北京、昆明、成都、上海等地，与当地老年长跑爱好者举行了友谊合练及座谈。中国老年人体育作为一种广泛的群众性活动，是近几年才得到普遍开展的。社会安定，生活改善，文化水平提高，为开展老年人体育创造了条件。许多老干部、老科学家、老教育工作者、老工人积极锻炼身体，争取为祖国建设多做贡献，他们之中打拳、舞剑、练功、慢跑、竞走、登山、游泳、打球的人越来越多。有些人还自选健身操,进行锻炼。1978年,体育报社、北京市体委、国家体委体育科研所联合举办了老年人新长征运动会,200多名年过半百的老年人参加了5000米长跑和太极拳、剑术3项比赛，这是中国第1次大型的老年人体育比赛。此后，许多城镇除在一般体育竞赛中增加老年组以外，还专门组织老年人体育比赛。北京市举办了包括长跑、太极拳、乒乓球等项目的老年人运动会；参加冬季老年人网球比赛的运动员平均年龄62.5岁，最大的74岁。上海市轻工业系统举行了以老干部、老科技人员、老工人为对象的"三老会操"，前 3名设流动奖杯,连续3年得前3名的人可获得永久奖杯。 目前，中国老年人参加太极拳和长跑的最多。大部分城市和许多县镇都举办了太极拳训练班或成立了太极拳辅导站（见武术辅导站）。群众性长跑（也叫健身跑），已遍及全国，如安徽省建立了"黄山长跑协会"，北京、上海、杭州、昆明、西安、邯郸等地成立了老年人长跑队。鉴于老年人体育不断发展，1979年 4月中华全国体育总会常委会通过决议，在适当的时候成立全国老年人运动协会。
