打样用照相方法或电子分色机所制得并作了适当修整的底片，在印刷前印成校样或用其他方法显示制版效果的工艺。其目的有三：①供制版人员检查制版质量是否与原稿相符；②供出版单位校对并签字付印，作为交货质量标准；③在印刷过程中作为产品应达到的标准依据。原则上，打样时所用的诸如纸张、油墨、印刷机等均应与印刷时条件一致，才能保证印刷所得产品与打样相同。但由于所需样张很少, 如果用正式印刷机，纸张、油墨浪费很大。因此,不同印刷方法都有专用打样机。胶印是在图像印刷中应用最多的，胶印打样机的品种也最多。常用的是平台式，一般为单色，也有双色或四色的。20世纪70年代以来，出现了各式打样方法，可概括为2类:①软打样。将分色的效果显示在电子显视屏上,作为制版工作粗略的参考，据以衡量是否在分色片上再作修整；②硬打样。用不同方法在纸或片基上印刷出彩色图像的校样，可以送交出版单位校对付印。至80年代最普遍应用的仍是打样机打样。此外，一些感光材料厂及化工厂发明了多种打样方法。如美国明尼苏达矿业与制造公司的科罗基、马切普林特、柯达公司的彩色打样法；杜邦公司的克罗马林色粉打样法等。
