中华全国总工会体育部中华全国总工会管理体育工作的部门，建立于1955年10月。它的主要任务是在全国总工会领导下制订开展全国职工体育运动的方针、计划，推动地方工会及各产业工会吸引和组织广大职工参加各种各样的体育活动以增强体质。全国总工会和国家体委在1954年10月召开了全国第 1次职工体育工作会议，制订了开展职工体育运动的办法，并决定从工会文教经费中拨出10～ 15%作为体育经费。1955年10月在北京举行了 全国第1届工人体育运动大会。同年成立了中国第 1支工人登山队，1957年登上了贡嘎山等高峰。1956～1960年,中国产业工人足球、篮球、排球队多次出国访问，并多次邀请外国工人体育队来中国比赛。1956～1961年，全国总工会拨款3000万元为全国工人修建体育设施，其中包括规模宏伟的北京工人体育场、体育馆和游泳池等，各地工会也相应地修建了一些工人体育设施。1979年 2月，全国总工会召开了全国职工体育工作座谈会，发布了《全国职工体育工作座谈会纪要》，重新明确了大力开展职工体育运动的方针、任务；接着又召开了职工医疗体育、城市体育、基层体育工作的现场会，举办了医疗体育学习班和气功学习班，并开展了多种业余比赛，全国参加体育活动的职工日益增多。
