认知均衡理论一种关于认知结构、过程和变化的理论假说。20世纪40年代中期由美国社会心理学家F.海德提出。他首先把认知过程分解为认知要素，并假设出要素间相互肯定或否定的关系，由此构成一个认知系统，然后找出认知系统平衡以及排除不平衡的条件和规律性。认知均衡理论的主要内容是，当认知系统出现不平衡、不一致时,会产生不愉快等心理压力,驱使认知主体设法恢复认知平衡量。这种理论揭示出认知如同其他自然、社会现象一样，是按照一定方式自然而然地组织起来的，它的体系内部有一种最大限度保持自身一致性和协调性的倾向，是一个趋于有序化和组织化的过程；如果这种有序化和组织化遭到破坏，就会出现认知无序和无组织状态，使认知无所遵循，失去原有的职能。设法使认识中的无序和无组织状态逐渐有序化和组织化，就是恢复和获得认知平衡。认知过程是无序与有序、无组织状态与有组织状态的不断交替的过程。认知均衡理论把人际关系、人际互动、态度变化等纳入认知领域。在社会心理过程中，认知平衡或不平衡这种自然过程，并非无故产生、随意消失的，而是在人际关系和人际互动的作用下时而出现，时而转化为另一种状态。在认知主体和认知客体之间插入人际关系和人际互动环节，就能较好地解释和解决认知的社会性和复杂性。调整好人际关系，有良好的人际互动环境，对于认知职能的正常发挥是不可缺少的。
