环境地质学研究地质环境与人类工程、经济活动相互关系的科学。地质学的分支。20世纪50年代以后,由于人口剧增,生产力水平极大提高和城市的飞速发展，环境地质问题成了决定环境质量不可忽视的因素。1962年，T.E.哈克特首先提出"环境地质"这一名词，认为环境地质学是研究人类与地质达到和谐与完满的一个新方向。到了70年代初，一些专家认为环境地质学涉及人类对地球利用的整个领域；而另一些学者则认为，人类对地球的利用集中在城市地区，环境地质学的研究重点在于城市地质环境。当前一个普遍的认识是，环境地质学解决所有与地质环境的合理利用和保护有关的问题。中国在60年代末已注意到环境地质问题。70年代开始探讨环境地质学的范畴、理论和方法。从1986年以来，加强了环境地质工作，开展了长江、黄河、珠江等大江大河及一些重要城市的环境地质评价与编图工作，为国土整治及重大工程的合理布局提供了科学依据。环境地质的研究领域相当广泛，主要包括城市地质、地质灾害、废弃物地质处理、医学地质、军事地质、地下水资源合理开发利用、环境地质影响评价与编图等。环境地质学的研究途径可分为两个方面：①地质学途径，采用将今论古的方法研究地质环境的变迁。同时采用地质学方法，特别是工程地质和水文地质的方法查清环境地质条件。②系统工作途径，将地质环境作为由大气圈、水圈、生物圈和岩石圈组成的大环境中的一个子系统，研究它同其他子系统及次级系统之间的制约关系，并评价和预测系统的稳定性，为国家环境决策和远景战略规划服务。环境地质学的研究手段包括:①地质学常规手段,主要用于确定环境地质条件；②计算机模拟，主要用于环境地质系统预测；③计算机信息系统，主要用于环境地质系统评价和决策。迄今为止，环境地质学还未形成一套成熟的研究途径和手段。参考书目殷永侯、哈承佑等主编：《中国环境地质图》，地质出版社，北京，1991。
