Research strengths
Now in its 11th year, the distinctive creative research ethos of the National centre for Research in the Performing Arts (NcRPA) at the Royal conservatoire continues to flourish. The research portfolio blends practice-based artistic research, applied research and consultancy with traditional scholarly approaches. The Royal conservatoire’s excellent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) result in Music showed that 85 per cent of our research in music is of recognised international quality. The research profile in drama is developing rapidly, particularly through the centre for Voice in Performance. The Royal conservatoire has a thriving research degree programme in partnership with the University of St Andrews, and as a founder member of MIDAS it is at the forefront of developing thinking on practice-based research in music. At the conservatoire students are treated as professionals and are industry-ready when they graduate. In fact many have been engaged professionally before graduation. The Royal conservatoire provides many opportunities for professional practice in the industry, with a huge range of mentoring, side-by-side, and apprenticeship schemes, including Emerging Artists with Scottish Opera, and a new Young Artists in Residence programme. There are annual showcases for agents in Glasgow and London.

The Royal conservatoire of Scotland is a recognised institution in the EU Socrates- Erasmus programme, linking it to 35 other conservatoires and institutions throughout Europe. Erasmus exchanges enable the conservatoire’s students to study overseas as part of their course and students at partner universities to study with us. They also have links to other institutions that offer student exchanges. The conservatoire also has industry partners including Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera, BBc Scotland, National Theatre of Scotland, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Shakespeare’s Globe, Royal Shakespeare company, Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland, New Moves International, BBc Scottish Symphony Orchestra, classic FM.
