山西太谷县广升药店的前身是广盛药铺，约创办于明代嘉靖年间。广盛药铺原是到太谷县行医的某大夫开办，后被当地地主杜氏所侵吞。清朝嘉庆帝年间，药店改组，新增姚聚等人入股，药店遂更名为广升（聚记）药店。广升药店出售的自制中成药龟龄集和定坤丹，在历史上很有名气，现在仍然驰名海内外。这两种药原来都是宫廷药品。据说龟龄集是明代方土向嘉靖皇帝进献的一种长生不老药，后由方士陶仲文的义子太谷县陶某将配方抄出，又经太谷药铺修改定名为龟龄集，从此流传于世。当然，说此药能长生不老纯属方土骗人。但此药确有增进人体新陈代谢，调整各部机能，加强血液循环，滋阳补肾作用，尤对年老体虚者疗效良好。定坤丹是专治妇女经血不调的中成药。清朝宫女一般是十五岁入宫，二十五岁才能出宫婚配。长期的宫禁生活，使大多数宫女精神忧郁，体力虚弱，身患经血不调之症。乾隆帝四年（1739），太医院集全国名医修《医宗金鉴》，同时拟出治疗宫女经血不调的药方，即定坤丹。但因此药方不能外传，故《医宗金鉴》未收入。后来，太谷籍监察御史孙某，因母病从太医院抄出此方。从此，定坤丹也流传于世。传说，咸丰帝二年（1853），太平天国派军北伐时，天王洪秀全曾命北伐军攻占山西后，要保护好生产龟龄集和定坤丹的太谷广升药店。后来，北伐军因孤军作战失败，天王关于保护好太谷广升药店的命令虽未能实行，但由此可见，广开药店出售的龟龄集和定坤丹影响之深远。广升（聚记）药店从嘉庆帝年间改组后，到光绪帝初年是它的迅速发展时期。当时，汉口是川广药材的集散中心，怀庆（今河南 沁阳 ）是生地、山药等药材的主要产区，广州是中西药品的进出口岸。广升（聚记）药店先后在汉口、怀庆、祁州（今河北安国）、禹州（今河南禹县）、广州等地设立了分店。同时，自制销售的丸散膏丹也发展到十多种，如治霍乱的“麝雄丸”、治时疫的“玉枢丹”等均负盛名，销售颇佳。至于龟龄集、定坤丹则更是该店生财的灵丹妙药，尽管这两种药当时产量较低，龟龄集年产仅 500瓶，定坤丹年产仅 300盒，但因价格奇昂，每瓶（盒）平均需银 2两左右，使该店收益不小。光绪帝四年（1878），广升（聚记）药店又进行了一次改组，药店更名为广升蔚，资方包括杜、段、申氏等，而药店实权被段氏所掌握。光绪帝十一年（1885），广升蔚店的资方内部产生矛盾，又进行了第三次改组。申氏带领七家股东退出广升蔚，另组成广升（远记）药店，或称广升远药店。从此，两广升分道扬镳，各奔前程。广升远首任经理申守常，精明强干，药店在他的主持下发展很快。雄厚的资本是经商的物质基础，申氏首先设法广为吸收游资，扩充药店资本。接着，积极向外扩展，开设分店，如在营口、济南、重庆、烟台等地也都设立了分店。此外，积极扩大龟龄集、定坤丹的销售市场，使这两种药的销售地区由原来的山西、河北、河南、广东等地，又扩大到东北、西南各省和南洋一带。有人估计，广升远从成立到1930年，盈利在70万银两以上。但是，广升蔚却与广升远相反，由于经营不善，每况愈下。光绪帝三十三年（1907），吸收太谷巨绅孟广誉入股资金九千两，又将店名改为广升誉。但药店经营并未改善，仍然连年亏损。19广升誉再次改组，更名为广升誉（正记）药店。终因经营不力，与广升远相比，营业一直处于劣势。
